Wedding Photojournalism Frequently Asked Questions

What makes your photography different from all the other wedding photographers? Why should I book you?
Wedding Photojournalism is often just a catch phrase used attract clients. If you look around my site you'll see that I am a working photojournalist. I shoot for national editorial and corporate clients. I have over 30 years of assignment work experience under my belt. I know how to anticapate the moment and capture it. Day in and day out I shoot stories. When I shoot your wedding it will be my most important story. One more thing you should consider: do you actually like your photographer? I'll be with you all day on your biggest day. It's important that we have fun together. Let's meet and see if we gel.

How many images do you take at a wedding?
I don't keep a running talley. I shoot multiple images each time I raise my camera. On a full-day wedding I often shoot over 3000 images! A carefull edit post-wedding will weed out bad frames, mis-fires, and duplicates. Your on-line album will have the color-corrected edits.

What equipment do you use?
I shoot with high-end Nikon digital cameras and fast F/ 2.8 Nikon lenses. I always carry two cameras with a wide angle zoom and a telephoto zoom while shooting. In my bag are backups. I also have a full lighting kit that I'll use if needed.

Do you shoot with flash or available light? Do you shoot in black and white also?
Both! Each and every location has different lighting. Outdoors I'll shoot available light with some use of reflectors or diffusion. Generally indoors I use just a touch of flash bounced off a ceiling or wall. If the venue is so dark I can't see to even focus, I'll pre-light the venue with my lighting kit. Since I'm shooting in digital, color or black and white images can be generated from the digital files. I usually convert some of my wedding favorites to black and white. You can request other images be converted or you can order the conversion when you order prints.

What about group shots, can we tell you what to shoot?
When we sit down to pre-plan your wedding photography, we'll discuss all the events planned for the day any special things you have in mind. As a photojournalist, I'll know what is important to you and how best to capture it. I capture the moments without directing your wedding. I do group shots on request but these are not tradiitional posed formals. I make them fun! I shoot these between the wedding and the reception. Budget 30 minutes for these.

What about formals of the bride and groom?
After the bride is dressed, but before the wedding, I often do a formal portrait of the bride. After the wedding and before the reception, I often slip away with the couple for 15 to 30 minutes to do shots that reflect the unique location and personality of the couple.

We want you to photograph our wedding. How do we book you and what are the terms?
First, thank you! After you contact me I'll send you a custom wedding contract. Look it over and ask any questions. Once your sign and return the contract with a 50% retainer I'll hold your date. Come wedding day, the full balance will be due.

Do you photography weddings outside of the Washington, DC and Baltimore, Maryland area?
Of course. I love to travel and have shoot destination weddings all over the country. Additional charges for travel apply. Please email me for full details.

When and how can I see the final images?
In about two weeks I'll send you a link to your on-line gallery. You can then send the link to all your family and friends.

Do you do engagement photo sessions?
Yes. If you are booking your wedding with me the price is $200. If you'd just like the engagement without the wedding coverage the price is $350.
